First Law of Thermodynamics

For we are the wolf,
and we run with its fathomless
hunger. We inhabit the elk
that is its prey. For we spark
in rain’s silver, the glint of sun
on snow. For we are the stone
borne to sea by a fleet river,
and we are the river. For we
shall become sand that was
the stone. For we are ghosts
comprised of nothing
but the breadth between fire
and fire. For what burns is
dismantled like the scent of
woodbine unpetalled
by breeze. For we are stars,
and the stars’ last light.
